Locked-In Syndrome

For those of you that are following along with the book I am reading, “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” by Jean-Dominique Bauby, I thought I’d find a description of what locked-in syndrome actually is.

According to, locked-in syndrome is a condition in which a patient is aware and awake, but cannot move or communicate verbally due to complete paralysis of nearly all voluntary muscles in the body except for the eyes.  Total locked-in syndrome is a version of locked-in syndrome where the eyes are paralyzed as well.

As I read the book over the weekend ( Happy New Year, by the way)  I began to wonder what I would do, if I was Jean-Dominique Bauby, would I want to end my life completely, would I go completely insane, or would I find some shred of dignity and positivity to perserve dispite everything that limits me from living a normal life again?

I really don’t know, is my answer. I just don’t. It’s one of those things that if God forbid you are in a situation like that can you really render a reaction. To live such a life filled with limits, filled with such saddness, how does one get through on a daily basis? While I haven’t gotten too far in the book yet, I have to wonder what caused this stroke, what was his lifestyle like before? From the back of the book, it seemed he lived a good life filled with much joy with the world at his fingertips.  And in a blink of an eye, (no pun intended)  it was all taken away from him.

It really puts my own life into perspective, let me know what your thoughts are.
